Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash
Married at FFUMC on March 1, 1968
They got married in a fever...
Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash’s wedding at Franklin First United Methodist Church is one of the most well-known moments in the church’s history—and in country music history.
On March 1, 1968, the iconic couple were married in a simple, intimate ceremony inside the church sanctuary. Just days earlier, Johnny Cash had famously proposed to June Carter on stage during a concert in Ontario, Canada.
The couple chose Franklin, Kentucky, specifically because the state allowed them to obtain a marriage license and be married the same day—something not possible in nearby Tennessee at the time. After getting their license at the Simpson County Courthouse, they walked across the street to the church, where they exchanged vows in front of a small group of family and friends.
The ceremony itself was brief and low-key—reportedly lasting only a few minutes—but it quickly became national news, marking the beginning of one of country music’s most enduring love stories.
Today, the wedding is commemorated by a historical marker in downtown Franklin, and it remains a point of pride for the church and the community, celebrating a moment when a local sanctuary became part of music history.
